Black Ash

Black ash is known for its color and tends to have a small sapwood that is creamy white. An open-grained, fairly easy to machine species, the heartwood is grayish brown to medium or dark brown. Black ash is often used in millwork, flooring, woodworking, and similar projects.

If you are familiar with white ash, black ash is very similar, but the biggest difference being density, hardness, and color. White ash has a specific gravity of 0.60 and a Janka hardness of 1,320, while black ash has a specific gravity of .49 and a Janka Hardness of 850, which is very similar to cherry.
